April and May have been busy months for the 4-H Shooting Sports Team.

On the weekend of April 12-13, five Union parish 4-H'ers traveled to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Educational Facility in Woodworth for the Northern Regional .22 Match.

Competing in the Junior Optical Division were Jonah Hodge and Jordan Walsworth. Walsworth shot a qualifying score which afforded him an invitation to the state match. Competing in the Sr. .22 Match (consisting of CMP, Silhouette, and Precision) were Colt Alford, Kade Hicks and Kyle Hicks. Alford, Kade Hicks and Kyle Hicks all shot qualifying scores and received invitations to the state match.

On the weekend of April 19-20, 15 Union Parish 4-H'ers traveled to the Shreveport Gun Club for the Northern Regional 4-H Shotgun Competition. Nine of these 4-H'ers (Brittani Gray, John Klagholz, Chris Worth, Jonah Hodge, D.J. Johnson, Jason Jeffries, Colby Gean, Daniel Autrey and Nicholas Clark) competed in the 4-H Modified Trap Division, and six of them (Danon Dowling, Colt Alford, Kade Hicks, Kyle Hicks, Cody Kenly, and Drew Bennett) in the Skeet/5-Stand division. Chris Worth was the first place individual junior shooter in the 4-H Modified Trap division and the team consisting of Gray, Klagholz, Worth, Hodge and Johnson was the 1st place junior team in the 4-H Modified Trap division. Worth, Klagholz and Johnson all shot qualifying scores and received invitations to the state shotgun contest.

The 2008 Louisiana 4-H Shooting Sports and Outdoor Skills State Competition was held May 2-3 at the Tallow Creek Shooting Grounds in Covington. Area participants included: Jordan Walsworth – Junior .22 Optical; Colt Alford and Kade Hicks – Senior .22 (CMP, Silhouette, Precision); Chris Worth, John Klagholz and D.J. Johnson – Junior 4-H Modified Trap. Chris Worth was the 1st place junior 4-H modified trap shooter scoring a perfect 50 out of a possible 50 targets.

County agent Jason Holmes said "We are extremely proud of these youth and their dedication to the heritage of shooting sports. We are lucky to have the support of many parents, grandparents, individuals, businesses, and organizations which help us continue this valuable youth project.

"Our Team Sponsor this year is Interstate Dodge – Mr. John Klagholz, and our major financial supporter is the "Friends of NRA" …. Thank you. Many thanks also goes to our instructors Tonya Hicks, Cathy Tucker, Bobo Hicks, Scotty Booth and Wilbur Harrison for their many hours of volunteer work and efforts in making the Union Parish 4-H Shooting Sports Team one of the best in the state."
