J.R. Akins
Mr. J. R. Akins, 80, of Monroe, passed away Monday, May 12, 2008, in Monroe.
Memorial services were at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, at First United Methodist Church of Monroe with Rev. Larry Stafford officiating. Arrangements were by Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Monroe. Visitation was Wednesday evening.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Jimmye Dee Hatcher Akins; daughter, Pamela Akins Shumake and husband, Steve, and their children, Morgan, Sam and Jack; daughter, Melissa Akins Wilkinson and husband, Gregg, and their children, Kristy and Lauren; brother-in-law, Douglas Hatcher and wife, Barb; sisters-in-laws, Mrs. Jean Hatcher of Winnfield, and Mrs. Dorothy Akins of Oberlin; and many other loving family members.
Donations in his memory can be made to First United Methodist Church Building Fund or The Shriners Children's Hospital in Shreveport.

Edmund Graves Brown
Edmund G. Brown Jr., a longtime resident of Monroe, died Saturday, May 11, 2008.
A memorial service was at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, at First Presbyterian Church in Monroe with Rev. Allison Moody officiating. A reception followed at the church.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Esther Ewing Brown of New Orleans, and Edmund Graves Brown Sr. of Newburyport, Mass.; two brothers, Robert Ewing Brown and Toulmin Hunter Brown, both of Pass Christian, Miss.; and by two sons, Leander Moore Brown and Percy McCay ("Mac") Brown.
Survivors include his wife, Bethia ("Bitza") McCay Brown of Monroe; four children, Edmund Graves Brown III of Houston, Texas, James Ewing Brown of Lafayette, Bethia Brown Bundrick of Shreveport, and Donelson Taylor Brown of Monroe; 10 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Edmund G. Brown IV, Andrew Hunter Brown, Claude Youngblood Bundrick, Claude Youngblood Bundrick Jr., John Leander Bundrick, James Andrew Wedeberg and Toulmin Hunter Ewing.
Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Jack Davis, Jack Easterling, Hank Wells, Robert Oliver Sr., Dr. Dan Sartor, Dr. James Truly and Dr. James Fouts.

Kandice Nicole Wells Duffey
Kandice Nicole "Niki" Wells Duffey, 25, of Monroe, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2008, at St. Francis North Hospital.
Her funeral was at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 11, at Paron Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Ganey officiating. Interment was in Ouachita City Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.
Visitation was Saturday evening at the funeral home.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Brooks Wells; aunt, Eula McKinney; and great-grandmother, Daphane Pearson.
Survivors include her husband, Brandon Duffey; mother, Marcia Wells of Swartz; father, J.R. Wells of Junction City, Ark.; sister, Megan Wells of Swartz; grandmother, Sandra Nixon of Sterlington,; grandparents, Huey and Emilie Jinks of West Monroe; great-grandmother, Irene Hall of Bastrop; uncle, Kent and Tina Jinks of West Monroe; aunt, Rhonda and Danny George of Sterlington, and Ecko Wells of Newton, Ill.; cousins, Jon Michael, Lacey and Katy; in-laws, Wilma and T.A. Alma Lee Farrar
Mrs. Alma Lee Farrar, 90, of Monroe, passed away Sunday, may 4, 2008.
Her funeral was Wednesday, May 7, at Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Monroe. Interment followed at Union Grove Cemetery in Lillie. Visitation was Tuesday evening.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest Reed "Jack" Farrar; son, Bennie Mac Farrar; and special friend, James Lee.
Survivors include her grandchildren, Ben Farrar and Jennifer Farrar; great-grandchild, Jenna-Leigh Geiger; and daughter-in-law, Jeanette Farrar.

Heather Danyelle Garsee, 22, of West Monroe, passed away Friday, May 9, 2008.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Deniece Garsee; grandfathers, Jim Washington and Eli Garsee; and great-grandmother, Alice Delaney.

Maurice Hester
Mr. Maurice Hester of Monroe, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2008.
His funeral was at 11 a.m. Friday, May 9, at Victory Baptist Church in Monroe with Dr. Greg Clark officiating. Interment was in Roselawn Cemetery in Calhoun. Visitation was Thursday evening.
He was preceded in death by his son, Danny Hester.
Survivors included are his wife of 62 years, Inez Hester; sons, Mike Hester and wife, Joyce, of Calhoun, Mitchell Hester and wife, Debbie, of Bastrop, and Tony Hester and wife, Sharon, of West Monroe; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Johnny Hester, Gene Hester, Charles Hester, Crozier Hester, Ryne Hester and Howard Hogg. Honorary pallbearers were the deacons of Victory Baptist Church.

James K. Irvin
Mr. James K. Irvin, 75, of Monroe, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at Glenwood Regional Medical Center in West Monroe.
His funeral was at 2 p.m. Friday, May 9, at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, with Rev. Susan Ferguson officiating. Interment was in Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation was Thursday evening.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Pauline Hannah Irvin; daughter, Cindy Brasher and husband, David, of Marshall, Texas; son, Ken Irvin and wife, Denise, of Monroe; brother, Billy Irvin of Mt. Pleasant, Texas; brother-in-law, John Hannah and wife, Libby, of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Michelle and Megan Irvin; stepgrandchildren, Lisa and Josh Stampley, and Randy and Amber Brasher; three great-stepgrandchildren, Emily and Connor Stampley and Logan Brasher.
Pallbearers were Travis Barrett, Wade Dickerson, Gerald Massey, Ralph Young, Bobby Copeland and Rob Hannah.

Mr. Ronald David Johnson, 45, of West Monroe, passed away Friday, May 9, 2008.

Survivors include his father, Ronald Lee Johnson; mother, Sally Scott and husband, J.D.; brothers, Jimmy Johnson and wife, Robyn, and Kevin Johnson; half brother, Skyler Scott; stepbrother, Brent Scott; stepsister, Cheryl Richardson; nephews, Jordan Johnson, Kolby Crew and Hunter Varino; and fiancée, Marilyn Rolls.

Thomas John Moutz
Thomas John Moutz, 66, of West Monroe, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2008.
Memorial services were at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe. Visitation was held immediately before the service.
He was preceded in death by his beloved father, Wilson Glen Moutz.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Crawford–Moutz; son, Eric J. Moutz and wife, Lisa, of Boulder, Colo.; daughter, Vanessa Crawford–Jones and husband, Paul, of Orlando, Fla.; son, Christopher Michael Crawford and wife, Brandi; grandson, Noah Christopher; mother-in-law, Hazel Collins; extended family members; and his best friend and pal, his beloved dog Dippy.

Rosario (Roy) F. Scalia
Dr. Rosario (Roy) F. Scalia, 77, of Philadelphia, Penn., and formerly of Monroe, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2008, in Philadelphia.
His funeral was at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, at St. Matthew Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Puthuppally officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. Visitation was Monday evening with a vigil wake service at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Angelo (Buffalo) Scalia and William Patrick Scalia.
Survivors include his five children, Michael A. Scalia, Patrick S. Scalia, William Scalia, Antonino Scalia and Elizabeth Scalia; his companion, Judy Allen, who cared for him at home in Philadelphia since his first stroke in June 2004 until his death; five grandchildren, Victoria Scalia, Jessica Scalia, Nathan Scalia, Aaron Scalia and Ultan McCain; two sisters, Josephine (Scalia) Simmons of Monroe, and Eunice (Scalia) (Banks) Andrews of West Monroe; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Archie Treadway and mother, Faye Wilhite.
