Miles upbeat about Tigers in 2008

LSU football coach Les Miles was upbeat Tuesday in a visit to Monroe, saying he's optimistic about the Tigers' chances in 2008.

Miles made his annual appearance Tuesday night at the LSU Alumni Association banquet.

Miles said he knew the Tigers were a special team last season by the time the Virginia Tech game was over.

"We played Mississippi State and then Virginia Tech and the chemestry really started to show," Miles said. "Our start was a preview of things to come."

The Tigers went on to win both the SEC title and the BCS national championship.

"(Quarterback Matt) Flynn showed great leadership this last summer," Miles said. "I don't know of anyone who was more committed to the program."

For the 2008 season, Miles anticipates another good run.

"It'll be a brand new year, brand new outcomes and brand new leaders," Miles said. "The guys will just have to step up."

After losing backup quarterback Ryan Perrilloux, many felt the Tigers would have problems, but Miles said he has three good quarterbacks in camp and plans to use all three.

He also said there was no controversy surrounding the quarterback position.

"We're going to have to try all three of them," Miles said.

The three are, Jarrett Lee from Brenham, Texas, Andrew Hatch, from Henderson, Nev., and T. C. McCartney from Boulder, Colo.

Miles also said he didn't antipate any real surprises to come out of the SEC race.

"I don't expect any surprises," Miles said. "They are all good.."

They open with Appalachian State Aug. 30. This was the team who surprised Michigan last season.

The Tigers have eight home games and Auburn, Florida, South Carolina and Arkansas on the road.
