Signs of West Nile discovered near Loop Road in Monroe The Department of Health and Hospitals says an area in Ouachita Parish tested positive for West Nile virus.
Dr. Cole Church, director of Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement District, said DHH confirmed that one mosquito pool, located near Loop Road and U.S. Highway 165 in Monroe, tested positive.
The mosquito pool was collected over a one-week period from April 28 to May 3.
The area where the mosquito pool is located and surrounding areas have been sprayed since those collections were made, Church said.
Recently, mosquito abatement began its night spraying schedule. The district conducts day spraying throughout the year. Night spraying typically ends in the fall.
The mosquito abatement district says residents should go inside when trucks are spraying their neighborhoods.
Church also said it's important that residents make sure that any water-holding containers are emptied to deny mosquitoes a place to breed.
Citizens can help by removing old tires from their yards and cleaning out birdbaths. Also, removing junk cars from yards helps eliminate breeding grounds.
Church advised residents to take necessary precautions when outdoors, especially during the evening hours. That includes wearing a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and the use of an EPA-approved repellant.
The repellant should be applied to exposed skin and on thin clothing because mosquitoes can bite through thin clothing, Church said.
In milder cases involving West Nile Virus, flu-like symptoms are common. In more severe cases, West Nile can lead to encephalitis, which can be fatal.
West Nile Virus usually is transmitted to humans through tiger mosquitoes. Birds typically spread the disease from place to place. |
