Galaxy Ball planning under way; event scheduled for May 31

Planning is underway for the fourth annual black and white Galaxy Ball, to be held May 31.

For the last three years, Janet and Steve Haedicke have opened the doors of their Deborah Drive home in Monroe to raise money for the Center for Children and Families.

Center spokesperson Erin Stokes said she was excited about the event because of the 2008 ball's special focus.

"This year, all of the proceeds will benefit the Children's Advocacy Center for Northeast Louisiana," Stokes said.

The CAC was established to give children's advocates, forensic investigators and mental health professionals a common, collaborative environment in which to assist children, Stokes said.

The 2008 Galaxy Ball will raise money and awareness of the center's existence, Stokes said.

The honorary chairpersons for this year's ball are Gov. Bobby Jindal and his wife, Supriya.

Stokes said they were hoping the governor and first lady would be able to attend, but it depended on the governor's schedule.

As in previous years, ball patrons will be treated to cuisine from around the world prepared by area chefs and restaurants.

And yes, Stokes said, Dickey Thurman of Thurman's Food Factory will be on hand again.

"He always represents Switzerland with a great dessert presentation and chocolates," Stokes said.

Entertainment at the ball will be provided by a number of local and regional names and will include performances by aerialist Mam Smith and a troupe of synchronized swimmers.

The Charmaine Neville band will headline the event.

"Charmaine Neville is absolutely fabulous, so their back," Stokes said. "We'll also have Code Blue and the Flatliners."

Tickets for the Galaxy Ball are on sale now for $125 per person and are available by calling (318) 398-0945.
