LSU outlasts UNO in 15 innings, 7-6

METAIRIE, La. -- Catcher Sean Ochinko lined a single to left field to score third baseman Michael Hollander with the winning run early Wednesday morning as LSU defeated New Orleans, 7-6, in 15 innings at Zephyr Field.

LSU (36-16-1) owns the nation's longest winning streak at 13 games. That distinction previously belonged to UNO (38-14), which saw its 13-game win streak end.

"What a ball game," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. "A great game between two outstanding teams that battled to the end. I'm so proud of our players for the way they fought throughout the game and finally came out on top in the end. We have a very resilient group of young men on our team who continue to play with a high level of confidence."

Hollander opened the bottom of the 15th with a double down the left-field line, and he was sacrificed to third base by centerfielder Jared Mitchell. After UNO reliever Matt Brown intentionally walked designated hitter Blake Dean, Ochinko slapped a single into left field, scoring Hollander with the winning run.

The contest was LSU's longest game since March 22, 1996, when the Tigers lost a 16-inning duel at Florida, 7-6.

Junior right-hander Louis Coleman (5-0), LSU's fifth pitcher of the night, earned the win as he fired two shutout innings, allowing no hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Brown (2-3) was charged with the loss as he surrendered one run on four hits in 3.1 innings with one walk and one strikeout.

LSU resumes Southeastern Conference play at 6 p.m. Thursday when the Tigers open a three-game series at Auburn. LSU is in first place in the SEC Western Division with a 15-11-1 league mark, 1.5 games ahead of Alabama and Ole Miss.

The Tigers have won nine consecutive SEC games, posting conference sweeps over South Carolina, Kentucky and Mississippi State.
