Tigers rally just misses mark

SHREVEPORT – Even a home run by Trevor Stennett couldn't push the Neville Tigers past Archbishop Shaw Thursday night as the Tigers fell 9-8 in a hard-fought game which went nearly three hours in a Class 4A state semifinal matchup.

The win was an upset of the No. 1 seed Tigers and put Shaw in the 4A title game tonight in Shreveport..

The No. 6 seed Shaw started the game with a single run in the top of the first. Scott Fabre drew a walk, and Drew Milligan singled to score Fabre.

The Tigers answered with one run in the bottom of the first. Max Campbell drew a walk and scored on Andrew Parker's single.

Shaw didn't score again until the top of the fourth when they plated five runs to pull ahead 6-1.

Neville didn't answer until the bottom of the fifth. Shaw got three more runs in the top of the sixth.

Stennett's home run came with Grant Owens and Will Hardy on base. This cut the Shaw lead to 9-3. Neville had to wait until the bottom of the seventh to cut the Shaw lead even closer.

In the seventh inning, Hardy and Raph Rhymes both drew walks and both scored on wild pitches to cut the lead to 9-7. With the Neville crowd making a huge racket, Patrick Ensminger and Bullock both reached base. Taylor Burch hit into a force play at second and later scored when Truman Van Veckhoven grounded back to the shortstop.

Burch hit a sacrifice fly to the center fielder which scored Van Veckhoven, but the Tigers just couldn't put any more runs across.

Neville finished the season with a 34-6 overall record.
