A West Monroe graduate and soon-to-be LSU alumni Luke Sanders has signed a pact with the New Orleans Saints.

The amount of the contract was not disclosed to the public.

The 6-5, 242 lb. linebacker played on the West Monroe Rebels team from 2001-04 before going to LSU.

"We had a good pro day," Sanders said. "It was a good introduction. This will be a good situation to go into."

Sanders said it would be good to stay close to home.

"I'll be going to the Saints mini-camp this weekend," Sanders said. "I'll find out more then."

Sanders said he would be playing strong side linebacker for the Saints.

"The Saints have a good program to go into," Sanders said. "They are taking a positive direction."

"It absolutely gives him an opportunity," said Sanders' former prep coach at West Monroe Don Shows. "I think anything like this would be a big help."

Most of the major colleges set aside at least one day in the off-season when the pro scouts can come and view what athletes are available

Various tests are run during this time.

Sanders, said it would be good to stay close to home.

The Saints made the playoffs in 2006, going all the way to the NFC championship game in Chicago before losing.

The 2006 season was helped by fans' reaction to the Saints coming back to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city and severely damaged the Superdome, the Saints' home field.

Last season, the Saints didn't fare as well as both running backs Duke McAllister and Reggie Bush went down with injuries.
