Kostelka opposes firearms on campuses bill

A proposal to allow college students to pack concealed firearms on campuses at the state's colleges and universities has come under fire from education advocates and at least one member of northeast Louisiana's legislative delegation.

While House Bill 119 advanced through the House of Representatives this week, state Sen. Bob Kostelka said he expected to oppose the measure when it reached the Senate next week.

The House bill would allow any student with a conceal-carry permit to bring concealed firearms on campus. State law requires individuals to be 21 years of age or older to carry a concealed weapon.

Proponents of the House bill said the legislation could help prevent violence on college campuses.

Kostelka, however, expressed concern that allowing firearms on campuses could increase violence.

"A lot of legislators are worried that we might actually enlarge the problem of shootings on campuses if it is allowed," said Kostelka, R-Monroe. "It's one of those things where there is really no easy answer to it."

State Sen. Francis Thompson said he supported the measure and noted its similarity to his proposal to allow guns in the workplace.

"If it's a question, I come down on the side of 2nd Amendment rights," said Thompson, D-Delhi.

Kostelka noted Thompson's proposal for workplace firearms made it to the Senate floor on Tuesday but it was defeated.

"I don't know about this bill dealing with guns on college campuses, but I suspect this bill will meet the same fate when it comes to the Senate," Kostelka said.
