Comcast employees spruce up zoo

More than 50 Monroe and West Monroe Comcast employees, along with their families and friends, joined the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo Saturday for landscaping and renovation projects.

About 50,000 Comcast employees volunteered for similar projects nationally during the seventh annual "Comcast Cares Day."

Local Comcast employees selected the zoo as the community organization to help during this year's event.

They worked on landscaping, replaced railroad ties and built some fencing, as well as provided the mulch needed for planting projects.

"Comcast is proud to be an active member of the Monroe community, and 'Comcast Cares Day' is our commitment to improving the quality of life in communities we serve," said Ronnie Colvin, Comcast's vice president and general manager for the Monroe service region.

"There is nothing more rewarding than giving back, and I'm grateful to the 50 volunteers who donated their time to help make such a big difference," Colvin said. "Working on projects like this makes us stronger as a team in the workplace and it is even more special that family and friends join us on this day."

Mayor Jamie Mayo said, "We are 'Monroe Proud' of the volunteer spirit that Comcast Cable and many of our corporate citizens show throughout the community. This is all about civic pride and having fun with a purpose. Their volunteer efforts will help enhance the Louisiana Purchase and Gardens Zoo, which is, perhaps, the biggest tourist attraction in northeast Louisiana."

Zoo director Everett Harris added, "When a community business gives volunteer staff and financial support we are only limited by our imagination. Working together to improve this premier family attraction will allow Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo to use our efforts to improve animal exhibits and guest services."

The Comcast Foundation will also donate more than $1.5 million in grants to local community partner organizations across the country on behalf of each employee and family member who volunteers on "Comcast Cares Day." The grants will help Comcast's community partners continue their mission of serving the community throughout the year, Colvin said.
