May's "Wild Friday"at the Black Bayou National Wildlife Refuge is a pre-release showing of an upcoming episode of "Nick Baker's Weird Creatures" television show.

"The Swamp Thing" features the alligator snapping turtle, locally referred to as the loggerhead snapping turtle.

A healthy population of this large turtle, which can weigh more than 100 pounds, inhabits Black Bayou Lake.

After viewing "The Swamp Thing," University of Louisiana at Monroe's Dr. John Car, who was featured in the Black Bayou Lake portion of the film, will discuss the research that he directs on these turtles in Black Bayou Lake.

The event will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, May 30.

Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located north of Monroe on Richland Drive.

The program is free and open to the public.
