Coach Bakari Beckwith of Monroe was named the new boys basketball coach at West Monroe High School.

School officials held a news conference Monday at the school gym to announce Beckwith's hiring.

Beckwith is the first African-American ever to be named head basketball coach at West Monroe.

Beckwith, who graduated at West Monroe, has been a part of the Ouachita Parish Lions program with Casey Jones for seven years. .

"I feel great and proud to have a part of this program," Beckwith said. "It's a great opportunity. I can't wait to come in and get my hands on the program this fall. One of the first things I want the team to know is what is expected of them . I've been here, played here and not worried about whatever anyone thinks. I was somewhat suprised that there were so few applicants."

"I think he'll bring in here more enthusiasm and energy to the program," said West Monroe Principal Sherri May. "He likes it to be competitive and he's gona get competitive."

Beckwith serves double time. He is a preacher at the New Visions Baptist Church in Winnsboro when he 's not on the basketball court..

"He is a fine young man," said West Monroe Athletic Director Don Shows. " We feel very fortunate to get him. Right now, we don't know what to expect , but we're looking for improvement. Coach Rickey Branch did an excellent job here."
