Hope Initiative works to transform community
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Recently, several people came together to talk about what could be done to transform the community. The organizations they represent include faith based organizations, area non-profits, governmental bodies, education leaders and the business community. Among the organizations represented are First Baptist Church of West Monroe, United Way , New Light Baptist Church , the Boys and Girls Club of West Monroe, Seeker Springs, the West Monroe Chamber , the Sterlington Chamber, the Living Well Foundation, Keep Ouachita Parish Beautiful, the City of Monroe and the Monroe Chamber of Commerce. In addition, there are several individuals and neighborhood groups involved.

Working together, the group developed The Hope Initiative, a community conversation on how our community looks when everyone wins. This is an event to begin a conversation about creating a common vision for community transformation that is asset based and invites input from the entire community.

The keynote speaker for The Hope Initiative is Dr. Bob Lupton, a Christian community developer and an entrepreneur who brings together communities of resource with communities of need. Lupton will speak about his efforts to transform inner city Atlanta , which began 37 years ago when he left a budding business to work with delinquent urban youth. Lupton has made it his life work to rebuild urban neighborhoods where families can flourish and children can grow into healthy adults.

The program will be held at the Monroe Civic Center Conference at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 8. Cost to attend is $10 per person and includes lunch. A limited number of scholarships are available. Registration is strongly recommended. T

o register, please call Ruthie Wheatly at the Monroe Chamber at 807-4004.
