Halsell gives talk on book at Cultura meeting

Cultura Book Club held its April meeting in the home of Sue Drewitt, vice president. Co-hostesses were Nina Albright, Ouida Oxford and Betty Stimac.

Jean Halsell entertained the group with a book review of "The Road Home" by Tommy Tenney and Mark A. Olsen. Halsell told the club members that although the book was new, the story was old and familiar. She challenged the group to determine what old story the authors were retelling in a modern setting. Connecting the names Naomi, Orpah and Ruth, as well as incidents in the plot, club members soon recognized the book of Ruth from the Bible's Old Testament.

"The Road Home" tells of the love a young widow had for her mother-in-law and her decision to go with her mother-in-law Naomi back to her ancestral home. An adventurous trip in an old, dilapidated car takes them across the United States from Moab, Utah, to Ephrate and Bethlehem, Penn.

After the program, Kitty Liner, president, conducted the business session. Annette Bedgood, project chairman, reported that she and Liner had presented a check from the club to Jeanette Ellington, director of the West Ouachita Senior Center, to be used for food for the needy.

Betty Oxford, chairman of the nominating committee, announced a proposed slate of officers for the next year: Sue Drewett, president; Linda Armstrong, vice president; Pat McClendon, secretary; Peggy McGauh, treasurer; Edwina Welch; parlimentarian and historian; and Jean Halsell, reporter. The slate was accepted by acclamation.

Liner reviewed the activities of the club throughout 2007-2008. The club year will conclude with a luncheon and the installation of the 2008-2009 officers at the Liners' home on May 5.
