Panthers advance to QF round

The No. 1 seed Sterlington Panthers used the home run ball to full advantage Monday as they prevailed by a 6-3 margin over No. 16 seed Pine Prairie in the regional round of Class 2A playoffs.

Coach Todd Moore did not know who his next opponent was to be, but it would be between the winner of the Pope John Paul/Oakdale contest.

The quarterfinal round game will be played Thursday or Friday and the Panthers will probably have to travel.

Ryan Phelps cranked out two home runs, Mark Threlkeld had one and Stewart Ganby added another.

"Any time you can get bit home runs like that I'll take it," said Sterlington coach Todd Moore. "Pine Prairie had a scrappy ball team. The game was pretty much the way I figured it would go."

Sterlington never trailed but the score was tied 1-1 after the first inning. Phelps hit his first home run in the bottom of the first.

Luke Dopson hit a double and scored when Clay Brandon reached on an error giving the Panthers a 2-1 edge.

Ganby hit his home run in the next inning, and the Panthers were off and running.
Dopson was the starter and winning pitcher. Stan Reeves came on in the top of the fifth to get credit for the save.
