Lady Chiefs, Lady Eagles advance to semis

Samantha Hamby hit what proved to be the game-winning single in the Class 4A quarterfinal round and helped lift the West Ouachita Lady Chiefs to a 2-1 victory in an eight-inning thriller over Alexandria.

The Lady Chiefs will play the winner of the Live Oak/Benton contest at 1 p.m., Saturday on Field No. 14 at Frasch Park. in Sulphur.

The other winner in Friday's quarterfinals were the Ouachita Christian School Lady Eagles, who defeated Vermilion Catholic by a 2-0 margin.

OCS plays Ascension Catholic at 11 a.m., Saturday on Field No. 13

The other two teams from Ouachita Parish didn't fare as well. Both Neville, who was playing in the tournament for the first time ever, fell to Vandebilt by a 6-0 margin in Class 4A.

Claiborne Christian also fell to defeat in the Class C quarterfinal round by a 3-0 margin against Hackberry.

OCS scored its two runs in the first and the sixth.

Brittany Gates drew a walk and scored when Cassie Clark singled.

In the sixth inning, Gates tripled and scored on Gracie Thaxton's single.

Thaxton, who was the starter and winning pitcher, was able to control VC easily, striking out at least seven.

The Lady Chiefs, meanwhile, opened the scoring in the second inning.
Chelsea Tatum singled and scored on Jordan Waldroup's double.

Alexandria tied the score in their half of the second when Amy Phillips singled. Phillips scored when Haley Verzwyrelt reached base on an error.

The score remained tied until the eighth. Botth teams had chances to score, but both starting pitchers shut the gate.

Hamby was the starter and winning pitcher for the Lady Chiefs, she played all eight innings.
