Lady Chiefs advance to state
Courtney Hancock drove in what proved to be the game-winning run to help lead the West Ouachita Lady Chiefs to a 3-2 victory in the bottom half of the ninth inning over Zachary Friday night in a state 4A regional match.
The victory gave the Lady Chiefs a berth in the state 4A quarterfinal round in Sulphur Friday. The No. 2 seed Lady Chiefs will play No. 7 seed Alexandria at 4 p.m. in Frasch Park.
The Lady Chiefs scored first in the bottom of the third. Christie Watson singled, then scored on a bad throw to second which went out into center field.
The Lady Chiefs added another run in the bottom of the fourth. Nicole Rhodes singled, and scored on Brook Portier's single.
Zachary came back with one run in the top of the fifth. Brooke Epperson drew a walk, and scored on Kesley McDaniel's single.
Zachary tied it up in the top of the sixth.
Barrie Phillips singled, and later scored when Mary Elizabeth Turner hit into a fielder's choice which tied the score and sent the game into extra innings.
In the ninth, Becky Burkett singled and advanced to third when pinch-hitter Mollie LaBorde singled, setting the stage for the game-winner.
This marks the second year in a row for the Lady Chiefs to advance to the state tournament.
Samantha Hamby was the starter and winning pitcher. She threw 14 strikeouts, including six in a row at one stretch. |
