Biedenharn offers eco-friendly project for children The Biedenharn Museum and Gardens invites elementary school aged children to garden with recycled materials on Saturday, April 12, in ELsong Gardens, located at 2006 Riverside Drive in Monroe.
Families are welcome to drop-in anytime between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The activity will take between 15-30 minutes to complete. A $3 fee per child will cover the cost of supplies. Reservations are not required.
"Children will learn how to recycle containers and make plantable pots from old newspapers," explains museum educator Christy Francis. "They will also learn techniques for growing a variety of plants from seeds, cuttings, and divisions."
Plants featured in the activity will promote backyard habitats for local wildlife, particularly plants that attract butterflies. Nectar plants for adult butterflies and host plants for larvae will be among the plant seeds to choose from during the activity. Seeds will also be available for children who wish to begin their own zoo garden similar to the one currently on display at the Biedenharn.
Both the educational display and handouts at the event will detail which butterflies children should expect to attract, along with notes on how to grow and care for their plants.
The Biedenharn Museum and Gardens is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 2-5 p.m. Sunday. Groups of 10 or more interested in touring the museum are requested to make reservations.
