Registration for senior games ends April 11

The 19th Annual Northeast Louisiana Senior Olympic Games will be held from April 19-24, in Monroe.

The games are sanctioned by the Louisiana State Senior Olympic Games in Baton Rouge, with qualifiers from this district advancing to the state games in the fall. The games are open to anyone who will reach age 50 by Dec. 31, 2008.

Registration forms are now available at the Ouachita Council on Aging, 2407 Ferrand St., Monroe; the West Ouachita Senior Center, 1800 North 7th St., West Monroe; Councils on Aging throughout Northeast Louisiana; or can be downloaded by visiting www.ouachitacoa.com.

Basic registration fee is $10. A specially-designed, commemorative T-shirt is available for an additional charge of $7. Deadline for registration is April 11. Entry forms should be mailed to Northeast LA Senior Olympic Games, P.O. Box 7171, Monroe, LA 71211, or delivered to 2407 Ferrand St., Monroe.

Events include art competition, basketball, billiards, bowling, bridge, ceramics, china painting, cycling, dance team, dart throwing, dominoes, football throw, frisbee throw, golf, horseshoes, needle art, quilting, shuffleboard, softball throw, spelling bee, table tennis, tennis, track & field, walk-a-thon, and washer pitch.

Most events allow for competition in separate men's and women's divisions, and most are broken into these age groups: 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70-74; 75-79; 80-84; and 85+ years. Event locations are Chennault Golf Course, Bayou Bowl, Monroe Athletic Club, Saul Adler Recreation Center, and the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
