Bateman eager for first Masters
by Joe Durham, Jr. - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Monroe pro golfer Brian Bateman will have the thrill of his life, Thursday, April 10, when he tees up his ball at one of pro golf's most elite tournaments.

Bateman will have the honor of playing in the prestigious Masters Tournament in Augusta, Ga.

Bateman won the right to play in the Master's last year when he won his first tournament ever, the Buick Open.

"It's definitely an exciting thrill," said Bateman, a product of Neville and LSU. "I'm just going to try to treat it like any other tournament."

Which may be hard to do, given the history of the event.

"It's gonna be a lot of fun," Bateman said. "The tradition of the tournament is awesome. They've played it on the same golf course every year. I'm hoping to get some momentum going."

Bateman said his entire family is going to the tournament.

"It's always good to have your family along," Bateman said.

They plan on leaving Sunday for Augusta, Bateman said.

Some of Bateman's opponents at the Masters are some of the biggest names in golf, including the world's No. 1 player, Tiger Woods, who has won the Masters four times.

Begun in the 1930's by one of the best amateur golfers ever, Bobby Jones, the Masters has evolved into the most prestigious tournament on the PGA.

Many past Masters champions will also be on the course this next week.

They include Phil Michelson, Gary Player, Ben Crenshaw, Fred Couples, Craig Stadler, Nick O'Meara, Ian Woosman, Tom Watson, Larry Mize, Mike Weir, Fuzzy Zoeller, Scott Verplank and of course, Woods.

If you are planning on going to one of the world's most prestigious sporting events, it will cost you.

A daily badge was the least inexpensive thing on the ticket list at $1,070.

Ticket prices and other things skyrocket from there.
