Tennessee Williams classic at Strauss The show continues through Sunday, March 9.
By Joe Durham Jr. The Citizen
The current offering at the Strauss Theater Center in Monroe is a little steamy, to say the least. This is because legendary playwright Tennessee Williams was the author. His work, "A Streetcar Named Desire" is the current Strauss presentation. This particular show is well-acted and very well-presented by the theater. Dennis Gleason is the current artistic director, and he shows his skill in guiding a cast which has no weak spots. Headlining the show is Brenda Rowan as Blanche, the sister of Stella, who comes to visit Stella and her husband, Stanley, for an extended stay. Rowan has a field day as the neurotic Blanche and this may well be the best performance of the year by anyone. Her brother-in-law Stanley is very ably played by Brian Bowes, and Meagan Jefcoat comes across very well as Stella. Others in the cast include Scott Banks as Vince, Cindy Scott as the neighbor upstairs, Dennis Mitchell as her husband, Travis Kelly as Pablo, Michael Steele as the young collector, Kim Bowes as the nurse and Daniel McGuffee as the doctor. The set is a stark one, as it shows Stanley and Stella's living quarters in 1948 New Orleans. This play is the top choice of Ouachita Parish playgoers in a survey which was sent out last year. Tickets are available at the Strauss Theater Center box office on Lamy Lane in Monroe. The show continues through March 9. |
