Ouachita faces Westgate

The Ouachita Parish Lions advanced to the second round of the 5A state tournament with a 49-37 victory over visiting Bonnabel Friday night.

The Lions will face Westgate as their next opponent Tuesday in New Iberia.

"They are very good," said Ouachita coach Casey Jones. "They are the defending 5A champions. We'll have to play hard to win."

After an 11-7 start at the end of the first quarter, the Lions saw the lead slip away as

Bonnabel clawed its way back to take a 23-17 advantage at the half.

"I felt in the first half we had a case of playoff jitters," Jones said. "Several boys hadn't ever played in a playoff game before. We played much better in the second half."

Ouachita kept the game close in the third quarter, finally tying the game at 27-27 on Nick Haymond's field goal.

Alonzo Martin then hit a jumper at the buzzer to end the quarter and give Ouachita a 29-27 advantage.

Bonnabel tied the score at 29-29 at the start of the final quarter of regulation, but Ouachita went on an 8-2 run afterwards which gave them the advantage they never relinquished.

Both Haywood and Antonio Landers contributed 19 points each to the total for the Lions.
Ouachita had good free throw shooting down the stretch as Mike Shaw and Landers drained free throws.
