Shakespeare Contest this Sunday at local church

The Monroe branch of the English Speaking Union will hold its annual Shakespeare Contest for area high school thespians on Sunday, Feb. 24.

The contest begins at 3 p.m. and will be held at First United Methodist Church, 3900 Loop Road, Monroe.

Students in grades 10-12 from nine area schools will compete. The actors have already been judged at their respective schools for the competition. Participants will recite a 20-line monologue from a Shakespeare play and a 14-line Shakespeare sonnet.

In addition to the competitive presentations, the Young Stage Group of Monroe's Little Theatre will perform.

Participating schools include Cedar Creek School of Ruston; the Louisiana School for Math, Science and Arts in Natchitoches; Riverfield Academy of Rayville; and Neville High, Ouachita Christian, Ouachita Parish High, West Ouachita High and West Monroe High schools.

The Monroe event is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
