St. Francis Medical Center's volunteer Talma Turrentine recently was named the nation's volunteer of the day by the Points of Light Foundation.

Former President George H.W. Bush started the daily Point of Light award in 1988 to honor recipients who exemplify the best of volunteering.

Turrentine is only the 45th person from Louisiana to receive the award and only the fifth from northeast Louisiana.

Turrentine joined the St. Francis volunteer program in March 2000. As of Sept. 30, 2007, she had volunteered 7,782 hours of service to St. Francis Medical Center.

Turrentine works four days a week in the gift shop at St. Francis. She has served on the hospital's auxiliary executive board as president and treasurer.

Since 2001, Turrentine has been the chairwoman for the Mayme P. Scott Memorial, which is an annual event held over one weekend to benefit areas within the hospital.

Each year, Turrentine contacts about 75 businesses to help sponsor the event. In addition, she has organized the annual silent auction at the hospital to help raise money for the hospital's tennis tournament. Proceeds from the tennis tournament are donated to the women's and children's services departments, which include the maternal/child, neonatal intensive care unit and the pediatric intensive care unit.

Since October 2000, $27,465.57 has been raised through the Mayme P. Scott Memorial tennis tournament.

The Daily Points of Light awards program is cosponsored by the Points of Light Foundation, the Corporation for National and Community Service and the Knights of Columbus, which provides funding for the program.
