Cultura Book Club honors deceased member with wreath

Cultura Book Club met in December 2007 at the Appletree Cafe in West Monroe for a Christmas luncheon and musical entertainment.

John Grigson, who is master of ceremonies for the cafe's twice monthly "Singing and Supper," led off by singing for the group. At the conclusion of the luncheon, cafe owner Sarah Kelley reflected on the season and sang one of her own compositions.

Following the luncheon, club members adjourned to First United Methodist Church of West Monroe. There they participated in a service of consecration for an Advent wreath donated by the club in memory of Melba Garrett, beloved club member who died in March 2007.

Lisa Lawrence, daughter of Cultura president Kitty Lined, opened the service by reading the poem "Today," which is dedicated to Garrett in the 2007-2008 Cultura yearbook. Senior pastor Rev. Ricky Willis welcomed the group, expressed appreciation for the wreath, conducted a responsive reading and led prayer. Family members present included her husband, Hodge Garrett; daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Mike Colvin; and grandsons, Michael Colvin and Matthew Colvin.

Hostesses for the meeting were Hattie Wilson, Clara Sikes and Susie Sikes.

Twenty-six members attended.
