Upcoming events in the twin cities Monroe hosts annual MLK Day event The public is invited to attend the City of Monroe's 29th annual birthday salute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 11 a.m. Friday, January 18, in the W.L. "Jack" Howard Theater. Mayor Jamie Mayo will be the keynote speaker. The 2008 theme is: "Building the Community: Making the Dream a Reality!" Several people will be honored for their service in the fields of education, justice, community service and public service. Singing, prayer and inspirational speaking will be followed by a traditional red beans and rice fellowship meal.
WBOA to meet Jan. 22 at Monroe restaurant Women Business Owners Association (WBOA) will meet at noon, Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Warehouse No. 1 Restaurant, 1 Olive St., Monroe, for networking and lunch. Please bring your business cards to exchange and ideas and questions to share. Members, guests, and any women who owns her own business or is planning on starting a business is welcome to attend. Renewal Inc. plans business seminar Renewal, Inc. will host a seminar titled "Starting a Small Business" from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Holiday Inn Holidome in Monroe. Dr. Paul Dunn, Director of the SBDC at the University of Louisiana at Monroe will lead the workshop. Anyone interested in starting their own business, improving their small business, or just thinking about the possibilities is invited to attend the free seminar. Clinic offers free exams for women The Northeast Louisiana Cancer Institute will provide free pap smears and clinical breast exams from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Jan. 26. The institute is located at 411 Calypso St. in Monroe. Appointments are required and may be made by calling 327-1953 or 327-1996.
Biedenharn director to speak at library Biedenharn Museum & Gardens director Ralph Calhoun will speak to Monday Milestones at 6:30 p.m. Monday Jan. 28, at the Main Branch of the Ouachita Parish Public Library in Monroe. Calhoun will report on the renovation and expansion project currently under way at the museum. The talk will include architectural renderings of the final project and photos of some of the objects that will be on display.
