Voter registration deadline looming
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Voters have until Jan. 9 to register to vote in the presidential primaries and Monroe city elections, which will be held Feb. 9.

Ouachita Parish Registrar of Voters Christa Mederies said many voters may have lost sight of the primary election because of the holiday season.

"They'll ask what's coming up and I'll say the presidential primary," said Mederies. "So I don't think too many people are taking much interest in the primary."

The interest she has seen so far has been driven instead by elections for mayor and city council in Monroe, Mederies said.

Voters who will be traveling on election day can cast early ballots at the registrar's office.

Early voting will begin Sat., Jan. 26, at 8:30 a.m. Early voting will remain open through Sat., Feb. 2.

During that week, voters can cast early ballots between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. every day except Sunday.

Also, some voters may be eligible to cast absentee ballots. Mederies said absentee ballot request forms and eligibility guidelines are available on the Web site of the secretary of state at www.sos.louisiana.gov.

Mederies said she was encouraging those interested to make sure they are registered to vote.

"We want everyone to get out and exercise their right to vote," Mederies said.
