Council approves water line for industrial park

The Monroe City Council took about three minutes at a special meeting Tuesday to waive its own purchasing procedures so a water line can be extended to a new business in the Charleston Industrial Park.

At its Jan. 22 regular meeting, the City Council voted 3-2 against installing the water line for Southeastern Freight Lines. Council members who voted against the resolution said they needed more time and information from Mayor Jamie Mayo's administration to make an informed vote. Some council members said they were concerned about town of Richwood officials not being included in the discussion. The industrial park is located south of the town.

The vote at Tuesday's special meeting was 4-1 with council member Betty Blakes voting against it. After the brief meeting, Blakes stated she believes the town of Richwood could file a lawsuit against the city of Monroe for illegally crossing the town's corporate limits with the water line.
