Alderman says WM police chief told to leave

West Monroe Mayor Dave Norris asked police chief Christopher Elg to step down no later than Jan. 1, according to West Monroe Alderman James "Sonny" Bennett.

At least that's what Bennett told a South Bend, Ind. newspaper last week. Elg applied for the police chief job in South Bend, Ind. weeks ago. He's a finalist for the position, too.

Last week, Elg turned down an offer to become police chief in Bismarck, N.D.
"He (Elg) was asked to resign by the mayor," Bennett told the South Bend (Indiana) Tribune.

"The mayor didn't give me a reason," Bennett said. "I couldn't say because I don't know."
