Money scarce for economic efforts

The Ouachita Parish Police Jury will cut its annual contribution to one economic development group by almost 40 percent and increase by more than 40 percent the contribution it makes to a smaller economic development organization.

At a recent finance committee meeting, police jurors voted to cut $15,000 from the annual contribution it makes to the North Louisiana Economic Partnership, or NLEP. At the same time, the Police Jury Finance Committee agreed to increase funding for the Northeast Louisiana Economic Alliance, bringing NELEA's funding from $3,000 to $5,000 for the coming year.

NELEA executive director Tana Trichell had asked the Police Jury to consider increasing her agency's funding to $10,000. The money was needed, Trichell said, to beef up economic development efforts throughout northeast Louisiana.
