'Fiscal hawks' promote state budget reform

Each year when the Legislature begins the process of crafting a state budget, the familiar refrain crops up: too much money must be spent on constitutionally or statutorily dedicated items.

But a group of lawmakers known as "fiscal hawks" hopes to change that, beginning next year with a look at comprehensive budget reform. Rep. Jay Morris was joined for a town hall meeting at Delta Community College last week by Rep. Lane Harris of Alexandria and Rep. Brett Geymann of Lake Charles.

Morris said the purpose of the town hall meeting was for the budget reform committee to connect with constituents. Similar meetings are planned throughout the state.

"We're trying to gather information about what stakeholders' interests are in the budget process and also explain what the budget reform campaign is seeking to accomplish," said Morris, R-Monroe.
