Touchdown Jesus!

It's that special time of the year.

The Christmas holidays have arrived, and that means the college football bowl season is here, too. If you're a fan of college football, it doesn't get much better than this.

And if you're like me, you're scratching your head trying to figure out how it is that our LSU Tigers, ranked No. 7 in the country in the USA Today Coaches' poll, was forced to settle for a Dec. 31 date in the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta. LSU will meet Clemson of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Like LSU, Clemson is 10-2 on the season.

I'm certainly not disparaging the Chick-fil-A bowl and its place in the bowl pecking order, but let's face reality. LSU deserved a more prestigious bowl than the Chick-fil-A. After all, the Tigers beat Texas A&M in College Station and South Carolina in Baton Rouge. Both of those ball clubs are headed to more prominent bowls than the Bayou Bengals. A&M will play in the Cotton while South Carolina will head to Orlando for the Capital One Bowl.

Though we could spend the rest of the year and then some whining about the proverbial shaft the Tigers got on the bowl front, let's turn our attention to a more important topic. That is, who should we cheer for in the BCS National Championship game, scheduled for Jan. 7 in Miami? No. 1 Notre Dame will meet that Trade School from Tuscaloosa, better known as the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Make no mistake, I am a Southeastern Conference purist. There is no other conference in the country that could remotely match the SEC on the gridiron week in and week out.

And it's gut wrenching for me on those rare occasions when I must pull for a non-SEC school. Yet, that's exactly what I'll be doing on Jan. 7 when the Fighting Irish square off with Alabama.

There are two primary reasons you should join me in pulling for Notre Dame, especially if you're an LSU alumni or fan by choice.

No. 1, Alabama is LSU's toughest competitor on the field of play and in the all-important world of recruiting. Having won two of the last three National Championships, Alabama doesn't need any more advantages than it already has in recruiting top-shelf high school football players, including young men from Louisiana.

No. 2, and more importantly, Notre Dame is a first-rate Christian university. Though Notre Dame could be accused of acting a bit elitist from time to time, we're reminded of the university's significant role in society each time we turn on the television and stumble across a Notre Dame home football game. Looming large over Notre Dame Stadium is a mural of the resurrected Jesus signaling a touchdown. Thus, the nickname "Touchdown Jesus."

And therein lies a rub for the secular Leftists in the national media, who, between now and Jan. 7, must pay homage to Notre Dame.

In other words, secular Leftists must acknowledge Jesus Christ.
