Tech's football season ends on sour note

RUSTON -- Louisiana Tech, despite having one of the nation's top offenses, was not selected for a bowl game for the 2012 postseason. The Bulldogs end the 2012 campaign with a 9-3 record.

The Bulldogs finished third in the Western Athletic Conference this season, a league with only one bowl tie-in. That went to Utah State, this year's WAC Champion. San Jose State, which finished second right above Louisiana Tech, received an at-large bid to play in the Military Bowl earlier this week.

This marked Louisiana Tech's final season of WAC play. The University will become a member of Conference USA in all sports on July 1, 2013. Conference USA currently has five bowl tie-ins.

"Under no circumstances did I ever think there was any possibility at all that we would not play in a bowl game," Tech head coach Sonny Dykes said. "It is a shame that our nationally recognized team and its 31 seniors have to end the season this way."

With Northern Illinois rising to the top 16 in the final BCS Standings of the regular season, that kept Oklahoma from reaching a BCS bowl and forcing the Heart of Dallas Bowl to select a Big 12 team to face Purdue. The Liberty Bowl, one of the few bowls with an at-large spot available, chose Iowa State instead of Louisiana Tech.

"Contrary to media reports, at no time did I, our head coach or a member of our administration turn down an official invitation to any bowl game," said Louisiana Tech Athletics Director Bruce Van De Velde. "In consultation with our coach and our university president, we asked Independence Bowl officials for more time to make a decision until we could properly consider all post season options that were available to Louisiana Tech. Unfortunately, we were not afforded that time and the decision was made to rescind the offer."
