Voter turnout in the Nov. 6 general election could be higher than in recent years, according to the Ouachita Parish Registrar of Voters.

Some 1,247 voters turned out at the parish Registrar's office to cast early votes Tuesday, the first day early voting opened, according to Registrar of Voters Christa Medaries.

Medaries said Tuesday set a parish record.

"In 2008, we had 948 on the first day," Medaries said.
