Roads, bridges vex PJ finances

The Ouachita Parish Police Jury continues to explore ways to pay for repairs to roads and bridges throughout the parish as officials proceed with work to craft a budget for the 2013 fiscal year.

The job of making repairs to critical infrastructure has never been easy, according to Police Juror Mack Calhoun, but it has certainly gotten harder in recent years.
"We don't have the money to do what we need to do," said Calhoun, who chairs the Police Jury Public Works Committee.

Public Works is funded in part by a one-cent sales tax. The tax provides the Police Jury with about $5.8 million a year. Voters first approved the tax in the 1970s and, for a while, it provided sufficient funds to maintain infrastructure throughout the parish.
