Town of Sterlington eyes sales tax hike

Sterlington voters will likely consider a one-half cent sales tax increase in the April 6, 2013 election.

Mayor Vern Breland said the increase was needed to offset the Ouachita Parish Police Jury's recent half-cent reduction in Sterlington's share of a parish-wide sales tax. The proposed sales tax hike would generate some $130,000 annually.

"We've got to do something to keep our Public Works funded," Breland said at the town's Board of Aldermen meeting Tuesday night.
