Symphony opens season with 'Rising Stars'

The Monroe Symphony Orchestra opens its 2012-13 season Saturday night with a "Rising Stars" concert featuring the performance Hannah Urdea.

Urdea won the 2012 Marjorie Stricklin Emerging Artists Competition. Urdea will perform as soloist in Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D major. The orchestra will also perform works by Rossini and Copland.

MSO Executive Director Vicky Valenzano said Urdea is a native of Romania who received her Bachelor of Music in Performance at LSU last May, and is continuing her graduate studies there. Winners of the competition must either be Louisiana natives or be living and studying in the state.

Music Director and Conductor Clay Couturiaux said working with young performers like Urdea keeps him and members of the symphony on their toes.
