Smoking in West Monroe got its own prohibition after the city's Board of Aldermen approved an ordinance Tuesday night outlawing smoking in parks and recreation areas.

The ordinance passed with no opposition on a 4-0-1 vote with Alderman James "Polk" Brian abstaining.

Two ordinances were presented for pre-council consideration addressing the restriction of smoking and, separately, the restriction of all tobacco product use. The Board of Aldermen approved the ordinance against smoking.

"It's getting to be pretty common to ban smoking in recreation areas," said West Monroe Mayor Dave Norris. "We need adequate signage where everyone understands. The main mechanism for enforcing is letting people know it's not allowed."
