MFD hosts citywide fire drill Wednesday

A City-wide FIRE DRILL will be conducted at 11:45 am Wednesday, Oct. 10.

This is an opportunity to test your company's evacuation plan in the event of a fire. The Monroe Fire Department is encouraging local schools, businesses, hospitals, daycares, hotels, businesses and residents to participate. The 2012 theme is "Be Rabbit Ready! Have two ways out!" Participating in the City-wide FIRE DRILL will help in preparing everyone to properly respond during a real emergency.

The City-wide FIRE DRILL is part of the Monroe Fire Department 2012 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK activities. Fire Prevention Week will be October 7-13. A complete list of related activities will be released soon.

As the 2012 theme suggests, every home, office, school and other buildings should have a fire escape plan for two ways out of the building. This plan should address two basic goals: (1) Evacuating the building in a quick and safe manner with two ways out; and, (2) Being able to account for everyone to ensure that everyone has made it safely out of the building. Having a simple action plan in place can make a major difference in the event of a real emergency. If you don't currently have a plan for your home or business, the Monroe Fire Department has handout material to help you create a plan or learn about other Fire Safety related subjects.

The Monroe Fire Department also knows that working smoke detectors save lives. Therefore, it is one of our goals for every home in the city to have a working smoke detector in place to provide an early warning detection system. Free smoke detectors are available at the Monroe Public Safety Center, located at 1810 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive (U.S. 165 South).

For additional information, please call the Monroe Fire Department at 318-329-2437.
