West Nile season ends
After more than three months of positive test pools and $1.1 million in aerial spraying operations, the West Nile Virus season seems to have come to an end.
That's the assessment of Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement, the government agency tasked with managing the region's mosquito control efforts.
Mosquito abatement director Shannon Rider said the area was not out of the woods, quite yet.
"People should still remain vigilant against the virus," Rider said.
West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne pathogen that is transmitted through the bug's bite. Effects of the virus range from flu-like symptoms to life-threatening fevers and infections of the brain and spinal column.
