Counselor's Corner: Accountability one of life's best lessons

Two weeks ago, this column addressed the difficulty of raising responsible children. We need only to look at our own lives to see the importance of learning responsibility.

If we can save our children from some of the pain we have been through, this lesson is one worth passing on. The truth is, there is nothing we do that will affect only us. As kids, we are responsible to parents, teachers, babysitters, aunts and uncles. As we grow older the responsibilities may change to include supervisors and bosses. What children need to learn very early is that whatever decisions they make (good or bad) will affect others.

The fact remains that we are totally and completely responsible for our lives. The more responsible we are, the more satisfied with who we are. We owe it to our children to teach them at an early age that we have a responsibility not only to ourselves, but to lots of others.
