School Board adopts meager operating budget

The Ouachita Parish School Board adopted an operating budget last week that positions the parish school system within striking distance of posting a meager surplus.

At a regular meeting Thursday night, the School Board unanimously approved a general fund budget totaling some $138 million. The budget includes a small deficit of roughly $582,000, according to business manager Juanita Duke.

In all, the parish school system operates on a more than $200 million budget, which includes all local, state and federal funding.

"Our expenditures have been reduced substantially," Duke said. "We're only projecting a (general fund) shortfall of about $582,000."
