Raising responsible children takes work

Our last column contained a list of things that teachers would like to tell parents. So many teachers have commented on how true these sentiments are in today's schools.

One teacher even made the comment that it should be required reading for every parent at the first PTA meeting or open house at school. The purpose of printing that was to encourage parents to help their children become more responsible.

Parents have brought their children to me in my private practice, saying things like, "he throws a fit every time he doesn't get his way," or "she tells me that I am mean and she hates me." I believe that as parents we all love our children and only want the best for them. But they can get on our very last nerve, and sometimes we say or do things that are not helpful at the time.
