Labor Day and Christians
What is "Labor Day?" How did it come about…what does it mean? Well, according to Samuel Gompers, founder and long time president of the American Federation of Labor, "Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country. All other holidays are, in a more or less degree, connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, or strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another.
Labor day is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation." Our Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers, it constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
Now, thinking about Labor Day being a yearly national tribute to what workers have done in, and for America…let's think about workers in the kingdom of God (His church)…and what His word says to and about us as 'workers' for Him. We are told that we are "Workers together with God" (I Cor. 3:9) Why? Because"…not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers…" (Rom. 2:13) .....For the full story, subscribe to the The Ouachita Citizen's NEW E-Edition!
