WM man pens history of war veterans home

A West Monroe man says the Northeast Louisiana War Veterans Home is an outstanding and valuable facility that isn't known like it should be.

So Huey P. O'Neal has written an illustrated history of the home on U.S. Highway 165 North in Monroe.

O'Neal, an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, became one of the leaders of the project to build a home for veterans in Northeast Louisiana in the early 1990's.

"Several veterans heard about the veterans home in Jackson, Mississippi, so we went over and looked at it and decided we needed one here," said O'Neal. "The director there told us we needed to form a veterans coalition, so we did."
