Deficit declines, enrollment up in parish schools

The Ouachita Parish School Board received a bit of good news at a finance committee meeting Tuesday morning.

Fall enrollment appears to be up, while the school system's projected deficit has shrunk. The School Board Finance Committee heard Tuesday from Business Manager Juanita Duke and Personnel Director Don Coker. Both were upbeat about the new academic year.

Duke went over the draft of the proposed annual operating budget for the 2012-13 year. She explained that the partial hiring freeze implemented earlier this year helped reduce the 2011-2012 projected budget deficit from $3.4 million to about $1 million.
