Red Cross seeks donations As of midnight Tuesday, 34 shelters were open in Louisiana with more than 3,000 people seeking a safe haven from Hurricane Isaac.
The Northeast Louisiana chapter of the American Red Cross still has two shelters open to house evacuees of Hurricane Isaac. They are: The Marbles Recreation Center, 2950 Renwick Street, Monroe, LA and the Madison-Tallulah Community Center, Beech Street, in Tallulah. The Monroe shelter currently has 68 evacuees and the Tallulah shelter has 58 evacuees. Northeast Louisiana Red Cross shelters are on standby, ready to open when the need arises. Local Red Cross volunteers, as well as state and national Red Cross volunteers, are actively engaged in this operation. Because this is a rapidly evolving situation, we are working in close coordination with our emergency management partners to help our Louisiana Neighbors.
The local chapter has made an appeal for donated towels, wash cloths, travel size toothpaste, deodorant, bottled water and disposable diapers. These items can be delivered to the chapter office at 414 Breard Street, Monroe.
Tropical Storm Isaac is predicted to trigger a large and prolonged response with major flooding across several states. People can call, click or text to donate by visiting http://www.redcross.org calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767) or texting REDCROS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
