The Ouachita Parish and Monroe city school systems announced Wednesday that classes were cancelled Thursday (today) due to the possibility of inclement weather from Hurricane Isaac.

Ouachita Parish Schools Superintendent Bob Webber said forecasters at the National Weather Service predict that heavy rains from the storm could continue into Friday morning, and power outages were likely.

Webber said a decision on whether to reopen Friday would be made about 2 p.m. Thursday. Monroe City Schools also will hold off on a decision about holding classes Friday until Thursday afternoon, as well.

A number of local private schools also announced closures.

Both Ouachita Christian School and River Oaks School will follow the parish's decision about holding classes Friday.

Officials at Learning Tech/Quest School cancelled Thursday classes, and will follow Monroe City Schools' decision about Friday.

In West Monroe, Claiborne Christian School cancelled classes Thursday, but no decision had been made about the resumption of classes Friday.

Also, Northeast Baptist School canceled Thursday classes. Officials there said the school typically follows the decision of the parish school system.

Elementary and high schools were not the only educational groups affected.
The University of Louisiana-Monroe announced Wednesday that all classes were cancelled Thursday and Friday, with classes set to resume Tuesday, Sept. 4.
Monday, Sept. 3, is Labor Day.

As of press time Wednesday, Louisiana Tech had not canceled any classes. However, La. Tech's home football opener against Texas A&M was postponed.
The Tech-Texas A&M game was scheduled for Thursday night at Independence Stadium in Shreveport. Tech announced Wednesday the contest was postponed until Oct. 13.
