Flowers named interim superintendent

Monroe City Schools has a new superintendent, at least temporarily.
Finance director Derinda Flowers will serve as interim superintendent until the School Board hires a permanent superintendent to replace Dr. Kathleen Harris.
The School Board bought out Harris's contract last week, ending her year and a half of service with the city school system.

In addition to appointing Flowers as interim superintendent, the School Board appointed Dr. Tammye Turpin interim Chief Academic Officer.

Turpin's appointment was necessary under state law because Flowers lacked the academic certifications to lead the School Board as superintendent, according to board attorney Doug Lawrence.
