After recent storms moving through the region triggered a series of house fires in Monroe and Ruston, fire safety is on the minds of many.

Lighting triggered fires last week in homes on Point Drive and in River Oaks subdivision. A third fire destroyed a home in neighboring Lincoln Parish.

While there is little a homeowner can do to prevent lighting strikes, Fire Prevention Chief Curt Meachum says there are some steps to take to reduce the risk of catastrophe.

"Make sure you have a well-grounded system in your home," Meachum says.
Grounded electrical systems direct misplaced currents--such as those generated during a lightning strike--outside and away from the home, ultimately terminating in the soil.
